Before, if there was a before at all...

Horizon's recent program What Happened Before the Big Bang? was was one of the most visually experimental and interesting programs I have seen for a while on television.  How is that? When all that were being interviewed were scientists about their calculations of predictions on the beginning of the universe.

Friday Favourites from Phaidon.com: Stephen Shore

Stephen Shore, Wigwam Motel, Holbrook, AZ, August 10, 1973, (1973)

Every week in honour of #PhaidonFriday I'm going to be picking my favourite features from Phaidon.com.  This week it's the master Photographer Stephen Shore.

I love the simplicity of his images, but when they are all seen together in books like American Surfaces you notice patterns and details, different and the same between each of the photos.

Phaidon Agenda this week features Shore's exhibition in Berlin, so if you're in the area you should definitely go and see it at the Sprüth Magers Gallery.  It features  80 previously unpublished photographs from his series Uncommon Places.

You can see a selection of what's on display in the gallery and a deeper look into what to expect from the exhibition and Stephen Shore's photography on Phaidon.com.

Direct action gets results?

Students gather in Trafalgar Square
The Guardian (Matthew Lloyd/Getty Images)

Today saw the second student protest in 2 weeks against the escalation of university tuition fees in the UK. It was hoped that todays event would be a peaceful one and that the scenes from the 10th November 2010 would not be repeated.  At this time, students are still on the streets and there are reports that the police kettle is still in action.

Check BBC News and The Guardian for for full story as it happens.

Pictures from London and around the UK are quickly being put out through the news and online.

Here's my selection of what's out now.

Lanvin hearts H&M

Tomorrow (23 November 2010), H&M is due to release it's latest design collaboration collection. This time round it is the designs of one of the oldest French fashion houses, Lanvin who will be brought to the high street.  These collections are such limited runs, you are lucky if you get one of even the most low-key items, that the clothes seem to come second to the hype and PR trail that they leave behind them.

The politics of photography

David Cameron and Nick Clegg walk into Number 10 Downing St, 12 May 2010 (Andy Parsons)
This week saw the photographer Andy Parsons and web producer Nicky Woodhouse taken off the civil service payroll and returning to the conservative party's books after there was outrage that they were being paid for by the tax payer at this time of extreme spending cuts.  Whilst I appreciate that it is necessary that savings must be made, it is important that this time is recorded.
